You'll notice that we divide our metrics into Primary and Secondary. Primary metrics are what we look to first to make decisions. If results are not statistically significant, then we move to the Secondary metrics to help us analyse creative performance and see a fuller picture.
Primary Metrics:
CPM
CPM is the main metric for brand awareness campaigns. However, depending on your budget we might recommend against optimising towards reach and tracking CPM - The reason being that with smaller budgets we tend to start our prospecting further down the funnel. Another drawback of optimising to CPM is that, while you will reach more people, these people may be less-intent compared with optimising to an action like a page view.
Reach and Impressions
Reach and impressions are important metrics to focus on when measuring the success of your brand awareness campaign. BUT not in isolation. We like to overlay reach, impressions and spend from brand awareness campaigns with revenue or % of new customers over a sustained period of time so that we can learn the relationship between them and measure when certain brand awareness ads performed better than others.
Ad recall lift (people) and estimated ad recall lift rate
This metric shows how many people (or what % of people) estimate would remember seeing your ad if asked within two days. While this metric can be useful, it also relies on the user answering a survey-type question which, depending on the response rate, may skew the results of your activity negatively.
Secondary KPIs:

Click-Through Rate (for static images)
Some may argue that CTR doesn’t belong under brand awareness, but we monitor CTR for brand awareness campaigns because it can give an idea of where audiences sit in the funnel and also helps us understand which audiences are filling cookie pools for retargeting.
Video Plays (for video)
If you are using video for your brand awareness campaigns, then we measure video plays to 25, 50 and 75%. This tells us whether the ad creative is engaging to the target audience.
Engagement Rate
Engagement rate measures how much your audience is engaging with your brand. This metric includes likes, comments, shares, and clicks on your ad. Keeping track of your engagement rate will help you identify trends of what works for your audience and what doesn’t.
And longer term…
You’ll want to measure brand uplift, increase in brand search or percentage of new customers.
Are more or less people searching for your brand? If your brand awareness is working, you want to see more people searching for your brand over time or new customers taking up a larger % of your transactions.
